New Orleans at Southern Methodist
When: 8:00 PM ET, Tuesday, November 12, 2019
Where: Moody Coliseum, Dallas, Texas

After a single-digit win in its opener, Southern Methodist on Tuesday will host New Orleans, the favorite in the Southland Conference. The story of the opener for the Mustangs will dictate the team’s success this season as they were without guards Kendric Davis and Darius McNeill, whose transfer waivers still have not been ruled upon by the NCAA.

McNeill transferred from California to be closer to his ailing mother while Davis (TCU) has an unknown case. Their absences leave a hole in the backcourt that was filled by Tyson Jolly, a junior college transfer formerly of Baylor, who scored 21 points while snatching eight rebounds and dishing out three assists against Jacksonville State in his return to Division I ball. “He's a lot of things. He's very very versatile. He's very athletic,” head coach Tim Jankovich told 24/7 sports of his team’s leading scorer. The Mustangs will look for a more comfortable win against a Privateers team that enjoyed a blowout win over a Division II opponent before being blown out themselves by Butler.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN3

ABOUT NEW ORLEANS (1-1): After using a nine-man rotation against D-II Spring Hill, the Privateers resorted to using five veteran players at least 27 minutes apiece against Butler. Senior guard Bryson Robinson has reached double figures in both games as well as junior backcourt mate Damion Rosser. After seeing just one minute against Spring Hill, Jaylen Key, a graduate-transfer from Northern Illinois, saw 28 minutes in the more meaningful contest against Butler.

ABOUT SOUTHERN METHODIST (1-0): In addition to Jolly, sophomores CJ White and Emmanuel Bandoumel also saw time running the point. Bandoumel, who shot 39 percent from three in junior college last year, failed to connect on all four of his attempts from behind the arc, contributing to a 23.8 percent shooting effort as a team. Forwards Ethan Chargois and Isiaha Mike are the only two returnees that averaged at least 10.0 points in 2018-2019 and both reached double digits against the Gamecocks.

1. SMU has no seniors on its roster.

2. The Mustangs turned the ball over 13 times against Jacksonville State, on par with the 12.5 a game they averaged in 2018-2019.

3. New Orleans went 11-1 when four or more players reached double figures in 2018-2019.

PREDICTION: SMU 78, New Orleans 62
