Alabama St. at Houston
When: 8:00 PM ET, Tuesday, November 12, 2019
Where: Fertitta Center, Houston, Texas

A week after much of the college basketball world started its season, Houston tips off its 2019-20 campaign with a home game against non-conference opponent Alabama State on Tuesday. The Cougars are coming off a 33-4 campaign that saw them advance to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament, while the Hornets are coming off a nine-point loss at Missouri State on Sunday.

Alabama State has had a balanced attack so far this season, but the Hornets don't have a single player averaging in double figures, with Tobi Ewuosho's 9.5-ppg average leading the team. Houston coach Kelvin Sampson is trying to replace four starters from last season's record-setting squad, including Corey Davis (17 points per game) and Armoni Brooks (13.4). Last season's American Athletic Conference Sixth Man of the Year, DeJon Jarreau, now becomes a starter and is the team's leading returning scorer at 8.7 points per game. Fellow guard Nate Hinton also steps into the starting five after starting just once last season, averaging 7.2 points and 4.4 rebounds.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPNU.

ABOUT ALABAMA STATE (0-2): Jan. 11 is the date of Alabama State's first home game of the 2019-20 season, as the Hornets are set to play their first 15 games either on an opponent's home floor or at a neutral site. Such is the life of a team from the Southwestern Athletic Conference, but it's certainly less than ideal for coach Lewis Jackson as he tries to piece together a competitive team. The Hornets do start four juniors and a senior and played Missouri State close, and the hope is that all the time on the road together will help Alabama State's players grow closer to each other through the experience.

ABOUT HOUSTON (2018-19: 33-4): While much of the scoring from last season's team is gone, Sampson thinks he has a potential star in Kansas transfer Quentin Grimes. The 6-4 sophomore scored 8.4 points per game a season ago for the Jayhawks, shooting 34 percent from 3-point range in starting 36 games for Kansas. He'll step right into a scoring role with the Cougars, teaming with Jarreau and Hinton to form a very solid three-man backcourt.

TIP-INS

1. Houston has a 15-1 record at the Fertitta Center, which opened in December of 2018.

2. Cougars F/C Brison Gresham led the team with 48 blocked shots in 2018-19, twice as many as the next highest total on the team.

3. Sampson has a record of 25-2 in season openers during his career as a collegiate coach.
