Indians 2, Mariners 1:
Jack Hannahan drove in two runs in the top of the ninth inning off Seattle closer Brandon League and visiting Cleveland rallied to win the rubber game of the series.
The rally spoiled a stellar performance by Seattle’s Felix Hernandez, who struck out 12 and allowed two hits over eight scoreless innings.
Indians starter Josh Tomlin (1-1) earned the win after giving up one run on five hits with seven strikeouts over eight innings. Chris Perez worked a perfect ninth inning for his fourth save.
Trailing 1-0 in the top of the ninth, the Indians loaded the bases against League (0-1), who had converted 33 of his last 35 save opportunities. Hannahan singled into left field with one out, scoring Carlos Santana and Aaron Cunningham.
Hernandez threw 126 pitches and allowed five hits with one walk. He worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the eighth by striking out Jason Kipnis and Shin-Soo Choo to end the threat.
Seattle posted its lone run in the fifth inning when Michael Saunders led off with a double and eventually scored on Kipnis’ throwing error.GAME NOTEBOOK:
